My Bixby HS students started brainstorming ideas for this piano theme two years ago. The thought creating & designing something that is “unknown” was a fun idea & something everyone could sketch ideas for. When we first started, students were excited for the opportunity to pour their creative energy into something fun and exciting. Something beyond themselves. As some of my students faced a difficult Senior year, they were hoping to relax & “let-go” and have some fun with this piano theme. The space, galaxy & alien themed piano was a place they were able to let their imaginations run wild. They were so excited that we even splurged alittle & added some glow-in-the-dark paint that will hopefully turn-out once it’s in the sun! Unfortunately, they did not get to finish it due to COVID & schools shutting down in 2020.
Now, two years later as COVID (hopefully) comes to an end, I challenged my students once again to dive into their imaginations & finish the piano that was started so long ago. This year, students from every art class at Bixby HS had the opportunity to paint a little here & there & eventually, it all came together. My father, R. Dickinson, is the model on the side of the piano looking for aliens while on the back, aliens are visiting our planet & even taking a “selfie” with a human! We wanted to incorporate astronauts so we had one swinging on the moon on one side of the piano while the other two are exploring the galaxy on top. Above the keys, you’ll find the “Mother-Ship” and for an added surprise, when you pull the key cover down, you’ll see some cows being beamed up into the spacecraft. Under the keys, you’ll see the aliens looking out at the earth from their spaceship & the aliens in the “Mother-Ship” mimic them in the widows above. We are so excited to be able to share our artistic gifts & hope you’ll enjoy our Outer Space themed piano!
Thanks so much!! – Julie
